Swoboda helps break up brawl at Elgin parade
July 3, 2010
By JANELLE WALKER For Sun-Times MediaELGIN — Not long into Saturday's Fourth of July parade, Police Chief Jeff Swoboda jumped out of his city vehicle and into the middle of a brawl.
Swoboda tackled and cuffed one of four suspects in a fight that broke out on the 200 block of Douglas Avenue at about 10:30 a.m., just a half-hour into the parade.
A fight breaks out along Douglas Ave between Franklin Blvd and Kimball St. just before the Independence Day Parade reached the area in Elgin Saturday.

Other officers in the area responded immediately and helped squelch the fight. The parade moved along behind Swoboda, and he returned to his Jeep to finish out the parade route.
Charges were still pending Saturday afternoon against the four individuals involved in the fight.
According to Swoboda and witnesses to the fight, Swoboda was in an Elgin Police Department Jeep near the front of the parade when people watching the parade began yelling to him and pointing to the men fighting. Swoboda stopped the vehicle, jumped out and gave chase to one of the men involved, eventually tackling him.
The fight had nothing to do with the parade, Swoboda said later, but appeared to rise from tensions among neighbors who happened to live along the parade route. "Large crowds sometimes bring out the jerks," Swoboda said.
A photographer for The Courier-News was nearby when the fight broke out, Swoboda noted, adding that many other residents whipped out cell phones and cameras to take pictures of the fight.
Elgin Fire Department Battalion Chief Tim Michaels said two men were taken by ambulance to Sherman Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, but that were consistent with being hit with a baseball bat.
Another woman was treated and released at the scene after getting caught in the scuffle. "She was a bystander at the scene, sitting in a chair watching the parade, she was not a part if it," Michaels said.

The Family and I, which included my my In-Laws visiting from Minnesota, went downtown to enjoy the Fourth of July Parade this morning. Our fun was slightly derailed when some thuggish individuals decided to get into a brawl right behind us. This was not a case of a couple of drunks getting out of hand. These were individuals intent on doing real harm to each other and they did not care if bystanders were hurt in the process. The wife and I each grabbed one of our girls and moved as far from the violence as we could. It was a very sad situation. My oldest was frightened and asked me why people were fighting. My wife rushed across the street to escape the violence only to have the fight follow her, she and my youngest ended up face to face with a man who had a bleeding head wound. My father-in-law stayed behind to help a woman who had been knocked over by the miscreants. Afterward we were all bit shell shocked by the experience. We did stay for the parade and we were able to move past the brief but intense event and we were able to enjoy ourselves. As they day went on and we talked more about the events of the morning we all remarked how disturbing the whole experience truly was. There are a number of great things about Elgin but this is not one of them.
I love the video, I love the soundtrack. 'nuff said
My multimedia instructor was showing us websites the other night that really use multimedia to the fullest. This one was my favorite, I found it very inspirational and intimidating at the same time.
Last night, I watched the animated movie Hulk vs. It is a very PG-13 tale of 'ole Jade Jaws against Wolverine and Thor. I would give this double feature a B on an A to F grading scale. You can turn your brain off and enjoy the carnage. After all the (very familar to comic fans) stories are just excuses to get the Hulk into a fight with two of Marvel's heavy hitters.
Darn! That *fun song* was dope!
I have to say that my hometown has a pretty slick website. I look forward to checking out the "Timelessness" of Fred Vegas when I return there week after next.
I love the overall design on this website and I now have 30 new burger recipes to try out this summer. Hello taste buds, welcome to yum-city.
We can file this under "Things I do not want." Anyone who utters the line "I smell you boy" should not be prominently featured on the front of a grown man's briefs. However, slap Bumblebee on some Boxers and I am your man.
